Chapter 1 - THE HAIR ON THE MARBLE FLOOR

Claire Beaumont held the severed lock of hair above Hannah’s head like a trophy.

“Now you look like the help.”

Laughter moved through the grand hall of the Carver estate.

Forty guests stood beneath crystal chandeliers, dressed in tuxedos and silk gowns. Some looked amused. Others looked away, pretending they had not watched a pregnant woman dragged into the center of the room.

Hannah knelt on the marble floor.

Her white apron stretched over her seven-month belly. One hand covered the back of her uneven hair. The other protected her unborn child.

Claire stood behind her in a white gown, still holding the scissors.

“You should thank me,” she said. “Long hair encourages servants to forget their position.”

The front doors opened.

Daniel Carver entered wearing a black suit.

The laughter stopped.

His eyes moved from Hannah’s tears to the hair scattered around her knees.

Then he saw the scissors.

“Put it down.”

Claire smiled as if he had interrupted a harmless joke.

“Daniel, she caused a scene.”

He did not look at his fiancée.

He walked directly to Hannah, removed his coat, and placed it around her shaking shoulders.

When Hannah gripped the fabric, a small ultrasound photograph slipped from her apron pocket.

It landed beside the severed hair.

Daniel picked it up.

A handwritten note appeared along the white border.

Baby C. Strong heartbeat. Twenty-eight weeks.

Beneath the note was a tiny symbol from the private clinic used by the Carver family for generations.

Claire saw it.

The color left her face.

Hannah looked up at Daniel.

“Please,” she whispered. “Don’t let them hurt my baby.”

At the end of the hall, Martin Hale, the elderly estate manager, pushed through the guests with a phone in his hand.

“Sir, she planned this.”

Security footage played across the screen.

It showed Claire ordering two staff members to pull Hannah from the servants’ corridor.

Claire whispered into Hannah’s ear before forcing her onto her knees.

“After tonight, Daniel will never believe a maid tried to carry his child.”

Daniel’s eyes lifted from the video.

He looked at Claire.

Then at Hannah’s swollen stomach.

Two guards closed the main doors.

Claire’s fingers loosened around the scissors.

Daniel took them from her.

His voice became dangerously quiet.

“Whose child did you think this was?”

Hannah lowered her head.

Claire backed toward the staircase.

“You don’t understand.”

“No,” Daniel said. “I understand that you knew.”

The ultrasound shook in his hand.

Then Martin enlarged one final frame from the security video.

Claire was not acting alone.

A man stood behind the service door, watching Hannah’s humiliation.

Daniel recognized him immediately.

Victor Beaumont.

Claire’s father.
