Chapter 2 - FOUR MONTHS BEFORE THE GALA
Four months earlier, Hannah Brooks worked quietly in the east wing of the Carver estate.
Most guests believed she had always been a maid.
They did not know she had grown up there.
Hannah’s mother, Ruth, had managed the household for twenty-five years. As a child, Hannah did homework in the kitchen while Daniel and his younger brother raced through the halls.
Daniel had never treated her like staff.
He shared books with her.
He taught her to drive in the empty estate parking lot.
When other boys mocked her secondhand clothes, Daniel sent them home.
Then his father was killed, and Daniel inherited the Carver organization at twenty-nine.
The kind boy disappeared behind armed guards, locked offices, and responsibilities no decent person would have chosen.
Hannah left for nursing school.
She returned five years later when Ruth developed heart disease and needed help.
By then, Daniel was trying to turn the Carver empire away from extortion, illegal gambling, and the violent traditions his father had left behind.
That decision created enemies.
The Beaumont family controlled shipping routes, political relationships, and businesses Daniel needed if he wanted to keep thousands of legitimate employees working while dismantling the criminal operations.
Victor Beaumont offered an alliance.
His daughter Claire would marry Daniel.
In return, the Beaumonts would support the transition and prevent older families from attacking.
Daniel had not accepted immediately.
Because before Claire entered the estate, Daniel and Hannah had found each other again.
Their relationship began quietly.
Late-night conversations in the greenhouse.
Coffee before the staff woke.
One evening, Daniel admitted he remembered every letter Hannah sent from nursing school.
“I thought you forgot me,” she said.
“I tried.”
“Why?”
“Because people close to me become targets.”
Hannah touched his hand.
“I’m already here.”
For the first time in years, Daniel allowed himself to imagine a life outside family strategy.
He planned to tell the council he would not marry Claire.
He planned to ask Hannah to leave the estate with him after he completed the legal transfer of the family businesses.
The night before the council meeting, Daniel and Hannah stayed together in the greenhouse until dawn.
He promised her there would be no more hiding.
The next morning, Hannah received a message from his number.
WHAT HAPPENED BETWEEN US WAS A MISTAKE. I HAVE CHOSEN CLAIRE. LEAVE BEFORE THE ENGAGEMENT DINNER.
At the same time, Daniel received an email from Hannah’s account.
I NEVER WANTED YOUR LIFE. I’M LEAVING WITH SOMEONE ELSE. DO NOT CONTACT ME.
Daniel searched the estate.
Hannah had disappeared.
Claire found him alone in the greenhouse.
By evening, Daniel announced the Beaumont engagement.
He never knew Hannah had not left willingly.
