Chapter 3 - THE TEST WITH TWO LINES
Hannah discovered the pregnancy six weeks after the engagement announcement.
She was living in a small room above the private clinic where Ruth received treatment.
Claire paid the medical bills through a Beaumont account.
Every payment carried an unspoken condition.
Stay away from Daniel.
Hannah had believed Daniel’s message.
She had seen photographs of him beside Claire.
She watched him place an engagement ring on Claire’s hand beneath the chandeliers of the Carver ballroom.
She had no reason to think the message was false.
When the first pregnancy test showed two lines, Hannah sat on the bathroom floor until the morning light appeared.
She bought another test.
Then another.
All three were positive.
Her first emotion was not happiness.
It was fear.
Daniel’s world was dangerous.
The Beaumont alliance was already public.
If she told him, he might believe she wanted money or status.
If she remained silent, her child would grow up without knowing his father.
Hannah visited a small community clinic under her mother’s maiden name.
The doctor calculated the dates.
“You’re approximately nine weeks.”
Hannah closed her eyes.
The child had been conceived during her final night with Daniel.
The doctor turned the screen toward her.
A tiny heartbeat flickered.
Hannah cried quietly.
Ruth noticed her sickness and forced the truth from her two days later.
“You must tell him,” Ruth said.
“He chose Claire.”
“You heard words on a screen. You never heard them from his mouth.”
“He announced the engagement.”
“After you disappeared.”
Hannah looked at her mother.
“What are you saying?”
Ruth had seen Claire outside the clinic on the night Hannah was brought there.
Claire claimed Daniel had ordered her removal from the estate.
But Ruth never believed her.
“Daniel loved you since he was seventeen,” Ruth said. “Men can become fools, but love like that does not vanish in one message.”
Hannah decided to contact him.
Before she could, Claire entered the clinic room carrying white flowers.
Her smile disappeared when she saw the ultrasound printout in Hannah’s hand.
Claire closed the door.
“Is it his?”
Hannah said nothing.
Claire snatched the image.
The clinic’s records carried the Carver family physician’s symbol because the community doctor had consulted one of Daniel’s specialists after finding a minor placental concern.
Claire recognized it.
“You will tell him the father abandoned you.”
“No.”
“You will return to the estate as staff, keep your head down, and disappear after the birth.”
“Why would I return?”
“Because your mother’s surgery is in three weeks.”
Claire placed the ultrasound on the table.
“And the Beaumont Foundation can cancel it in three seconds.”
Hannah stared at her.
“You would let my mother die?”
Claire leaned closer.
