Chapter 5 - THE HEIR CLAUSE
Daniel’s grandfather had created the Carver Continuity Trust decades earlier.
The trust controlled the family’s legal corporations, properties, and voting shares.
Daniel served as temporary head.
But an old clause limited his power.
Until Daniel produced a legally recognized heir, major structural changes required approval from three family trustees.
Two of those trustees supported Victor Beaumont.
The marriage agreement would replace the old trust with a joint Carver-Beaumont holding company.
Claire would gain equal control after the wedding.
But if Daniel’s biological child was recognized before the merger closed, the continuity clause would activate.
The unborn child would become the protected future beneficiary.
Daniel would receive full voting control as the child’s parent.
The trustees could no longer force the Beaumont merger.
Claire would lose the company, the estate, and the influence her father had spent years pursuing.
Martin photographed the memorandum.
He also found an email from Victor.
THE SERVANT’S CONDITION MUST NOT BE CONNECTED TO DANIEL BEFORE SIGNATURE DAY.
Claire replied:
SHE WILL NOT SPEAK. HER MOTHER’S LIFE DEPENDS ON IT.
A second email was worse.
IF THE PREGNANCY BECOMES UNSTABLE, THE PROBLEM SOLVES ITSELF.
Martin’s hands shook.
He forwarded copies to an encrypted account.
Then footsteps approached the office.
He replaced the folder and left through the service door.
The next morning, Claire reassigned him to the family’s rural property.
“You’ve worked too hard,” she told him. “You deserve rest.”
Martin smiled politely.
“I prefer remaining where Mr. Carver placed me.”
Claire’s eyes hardened.
“Daniel will soon have a wife managing his home.”
“A wife is not an estate manager.”
Claire moved closer.
“You are loyal to the wrong people.”
Martin looked toward Hannah carrying linens across the hall.
“No,” he said. “I am loyal to the people who have earned it.”
Claire began planning the engagement gala.
The event would include family trustees, investors, political allies, and leaders from every organization connected to the Carver name.
Daniel was expected to return that evening.
The final merger documents would be signed the following morning.
Claire told Victor she needed Hannah removed before Daniel arrived.
Victor advised a quiet dismissal.
Claire wanted something more.
“She needs to understand that no one in that house sees her as anything but a servant.”
Victor warned her not to create evidence.
Claire smiled.
“Humiliation isn’t a crime.”
She ordered Hannah to work the gala despite her doctor’s instructions to rest.
