Chapter 12 - THE MAN IN THE HOSPITAL CORRIDOR
The false maintenance worker never reached Hannah’s room.
Daniel’s security chief, Marcus Reed, stopped him beside the emergency stairwell.
Hospital police found the syringe inside his sleeve.
It contained a medication capable of causing premature labor.
The man’s phone showed instructions from Sebastian.
MAKE IT LOOK LIKE NATURAL COMPLICATIONS.
Sebastian attempted to flee the country.
He was arrested at a private airfield.
The attack forced Daniel to confront the deepest problem inside the Carver organization.
The danger did not come only from Claire.
It came from a structure where men followed private orders without asking whether those orders were legal or moral.
Daniel dissolved the family security crews.
He replaced them with licensed professionals accountable to external authorities.
He surrendered weapons connected to past crimes.
He provided records that exposed bribed officials and hidden businesses.
Older members called him weak.
One warned that cooperating with federal investigators would destroy the Carver name.
Daniel answered, “Then perhaps the name deserves to be destroyed.”
Hannah heard about the decision from Martin.
“Daniel may lose everything,” he said.
“Everything he built illegally,” Hannah replied.
“And much of what was built before him.”
She looked through the hospital window.
“I don’t want my child inheriting fear.”
When Daniel visited, he did not ask for praise.
He sat beside her and watched the fetal monitor.
“I am ending the organization as it existed,” he said.
“What will remain?”
“The legal companies, if the courts allow it.”
“And your position?”
“I don’t know.”
Hannah studied him.
For years, Daniel had been called a mafia boss because power followed his surname.
Now he was choosing actions that could leave him ordinary.
“Are you afraid?” she asked.
“Yes.”
It was the first time she heard him admit the word without turning it into control.
He looked at her damaged hair.
“I’m sorry I brought you into this life.”
“You didn’t bring me into it. I grew up in it.”
“Then I should have helped you escape.”
“You cannot change what happened.”
“No.”
“But you can make sure our child never kneels in that hall because someone thinks money determines human worth.”
Daniel’s eyes filled.
“I will.”
A nurse entered with an envelope recovered from Ruth’s clinic file.
It contained a letter Hannah had written to Daniel after learning she was pregnant.
Claire had intercepted it.
