Chapter 6 - THE WARNING BENEATH THE TEA TRAY

On the morning of the gala, Hannah felt the baby moving less than usual.
She asked for permission to visit the doctor.
Claire refused.
“You went last week.”
“The baby usually moves after breakfast.”
“Perhaps it is learning not to demand attention.”
Hannah gripped the edge of the kitchen table.
Martin entered carrying the formal guest list.
He saw her face.
“What is wrong?”
Claire answered for her.
“She’s nervous about serving important people.”
After Claire left, Martin slipped a folded note beneath Hannah’s tea tray.
DANIEL RETURNS AT NINE. STAY NEAR CAMERAS. DO NOT GO ANYWHERE ALONE.
Hannah read it twice.
Martin knew something.
She found him near the wine cellar.
“Why are you warning me?”
“Because Claire has been planning your removal.”
“She already controls my mother’s treatment.”
“Not anymore.”
Martin had contacted the hospital’s charitable-care director.
Ruth’s surgery was protected by an independent medical grant. Claire had lied about her power to cancel it.
Hannah leaned against the wall.
“All this time…”
“She controlled the invoices, not the treatment.”
Tears filled Hannah’s eyes.
“I could have told Daniel.”
“You can tell him tonight.”
Hannah looked toward the ballroom.
“What if he believes her?”
Martin handed her copies of the forged messages.
Both had been traced to an account created through Claire’s personal assistant.
Hannah read the message supposedly sent by Daniel.
What happened between us was a mistake.
The words had shaped every painful month.
They had never belonged to him.
Martin continued.
“I also found the heir memorandum.”
Hannah’s hand moved to her belly.
“She knows.”
“Yes.”
“Does Daniel?”
“No.”
“Then why wait until tonight?”
“Because Victor has men around the estate. If we confront Claire privately, evidence may disappear and you may be removed again.”
Martin had arranged for Daniel’s trusted security chief to return with him.
Every hidden camera would record continuously.
Hannah wanted to leave immediately.
Then she saw Claire standing in the doorway.
“What are you two discussing?”
Martin lifted the guest list.
“Seating.”
Claire looked from him to Hannah.
Her suspicion deepened.
At six that evening, Claire ordered Hannah into the servants’ dressing room.
A white apron and plain black dress waited inside.
“You will serve the main hall.”
“My doctor told me to rest.”
Claire touched Hannah’s unevenly breathing stomach.
“Your doctor isn’t marrying Daniel tomorrow.”
Hannah stepped away.
Claire smiled.
May you like
“Tonight, everyone will see exactly what you are.”
👉 Hannah entered the gala knowing Claire had forged the past—but she did not know the humiliation had been designed to threaten her baby in front of witnesses.
