Chapter 16 - THE WOMAN WITH THE UNEVEN HAIR
Hannah testified while eight months pregnant.
She wore a dark blue dress.
Her hair had grown slightly, but the uneven cut remained visible around one side of her face.
A stylist offered extensions.
Hannah refused.
“I want the jury to see what she did.”
Claire watched from the defense table.
Without the white gown, scissors, and powerful guests surrounding her, she looked smaller.
The prosecutor asked Hannah to describe the gala.
“She pulled me into the center of the room.”
“Why didn’t you leave?”
“Two guards blocked me.”
“What did she say before cutting your hair?”
Hannah looked directly at Claire.
“She said my baby would not survive long enough to inherit anything.”
The ballroom recording played.
Every word filled the courtroom.
Claire’s attorney argued that Hannah had entered a relationship with her employer to gain money.
Hannah remained calm.
“I knew Daniel before he had an empire to offer.”
“You accepted employment inside his home.”
“I returned because Claire threatened my mother’s medical care.”
“You remained after discovering the pregnancy.”
“I was being monitored.”
The attorney displayed photographs of Daniel placing his coat around Hannah at the gala.
“You received protection immediately.”
“After months of believing he rejected me.”
“Mrs. Beaumont believed you were attempting to disrupt her marriage.”
“There was no marriage.”
“The engagement was public.”
“The threats were private.”
The attorney asked whether Hannah wanted the Carver fortune for her daughter.
“I want my daughter to inherit safety, not fear.”
Daniel testified next.
He admitted the relationship.
The forged messages.
His failure to investigate.
He did not present himself as an innocent hero.
“I believed Claire because the alliance made my responsibilities easier.”
The prosecutor asked what he saw when he entered the gala.
“The woman I loved was kneeling while people laughed.”
“And what did you understand?”
“That my silence had helped build the room around her.”
Martin’s footage, medical records, financial emails, and Claire’s private recordings left little doubt.
Victor was convicted of conspiracy, attempted kidnapping, financial crimes, medical coercion, and Nicholas’s murder.
Claire was convicted of assault, conspiracy, extortion, identity fraud, attempted child trafficking, and crimes connected to the medical tampering.
Dr. Vale, Sebastian, and the hired attackers received prison sentences.
Before Claire was led away, she looked at Hannah.
“You ruined everything.”
Hannah touched her shortened hair.
