Chapter 9 - The Murder Accusation

I marched straight toward the rear of police van.
The metal door was open, guarded by marshals.
Richard sat on the bench inside, wearing handcuffs.
He looked up at me with defensive, bitter eyes.
"You found my gold, didn't you?" Richard mocked.
"You can't touch that money, it is legally mine!"
I held up my late mother's leather diary.
I held it inches away from his pale face.
Richard's mocking smile vanished instantly from his mouth.
His eyes bulged in pure, unadulterated, terrifying horror.
He recognized the book he thought he destroyed years.
"Where... where did you get that?" he stammered.
"You hid it in your safe, Richard," I.
"Elizabeth wrote down every poison dose you gave her."
"She wrote down the dates, times, and symptoms."
"She knew you were killing her for her estate."
Richard began shaking violently on the hard metal bench.
Sweat poured down his face, soaking his tuxedo collar.
"She was sick! She was crazy!" Richard shrieked.
"No court will believe the ramblings of a dead!"
"We exhumed her body yesterday morning, Richard," I.
"The forensic lab found high levels of arsenic poison."
"The state prosecutor is filing first-degree murder charges today."
The final blow landed on Richard's fragile mind hard.
He let out a strangled gasp, collapsing backward.
The charge of attempted murder carried a life sentence.
First-degree murder carried the state capital death penalty.
He was eighty-two years old, facing lethal injection.
The mighty corporate giant was reduced to crying wreck.
He wept hysterically, begging me for mercy on street.
"Claire... please... I am your father!" he.
"I gave you life! You cannot execute me!"
I looked down at him with absolute emotional detachment.
"You killed my mother for cash, Richard," I.
"You disowned me when I refused your corruption."
"You are not my father. You are a prisoner."
I stepped back from the police van doors.
"Slam the doors, Officer," I commanded quietly.
The heavy steel doors slammed shut with loud thud.
The iron latch locked into place firmly today.
The police van pulled away, sirens wailing loudly.
