Chapter 10 - The Mother's Betrayal
My mother Margaret walked out of hotel lobby weeping.
She saw the police van driving away down street.
She ran up to me, grabbing my uniform sleeve.
Her hands were shaking wildly as she begged me.
"Claire! You must drop the murder charges against him!"
"If he goes to trial, the family trust is lost!"
"I will be left with nothing to live on!"
I turned my head and looked into her eyes.
"You knew, didn't you?" I asked softly.
"You knew he poisoned Elizabeth thirty years ago."
Margaret froze, her eyes darting away in sudden panic.
She tried to pull her hands back from sleeve.
I grabbed her wrist with a firm, unyielding grip.
"Answer me, Margaret!" I demanded in low voice.
"Did you help him poison my biological mother?"
Margaret burst into fresh, guilty tears on the sidewalk.
"He promised me everything, Claire!" Margaret sobbed out.
"He said we would own the entire city together!"
"I was young... I needed security for my future!"
The horrifying truth was laid completely bare on sidewalk.
Margaret was not an innocent, clueless victim today.
She was his active accomplice in my mother's murder.
She helped him eliminate Elizabeth to take her place.
She raised me with cold cruelty because I reminded her.
I reminded her of the innocent woman she helped kill.
My heart hardened into solid, unbreakable military steel.
"Agent Vance, take her into custody as well," I.
Agent Vance stepped forward with another pair handcuffs.
Margaret shrieked loudly as steel ratcheted around wrists.
"No! I am a victim! He forced me!"
"You signed the offshore bank documents, Margaret," Vance.
"You received two million dollars from the murder trust."
"You are charged with conspiracy to commit capital murder."
The federal marshals pulled Margaret toward a second car.
She thrashed and screamed, her navy dress tearing.
The townspeople gathered on sidewalk watched her fall.
The woman who ruled high society was arrested.
Both patriarch and matriarch were going to prison.
I stood alone on the sunny sidewalk, breathing deeply.
