Chapter 3 - The Broken Bond

My mother Margaret rushed down the altar steps.
Her expensive navy gown rustled loudly on carpet.
She grabbed Richard's arm, staring at me wildly.
"Claire, please do not do this here!"
"This is your brother's million-dollar wedding day!"
"Think of our family name in this city!"
I looked down at my mother with detachment.
Thirty years ago, she threw away my belongings.
She threw my Annapolis acceptance letter in trash.
She told me women belonged in corporate boardrooms.
She said military service was for poor people.
When I enlisted anyway, they disowned my name.
They erased my childhood photos from their mansion.
They told high-society friends I died overseas.
They built a false narrative to protect pride.
Now their fake world was crashing around them.
"You stopped being my family years ago, Margaret."
I said every word with calm surgical precision.
Julian stepped forward from beside his beautiful bride.
His face was red with pure spoiled entitlement.
"You are just jealous of my success, Claire!"
Julian shouted, pointing his finger at my chest.
"Father gave me the company because I earned!"
"You ran away to play soldier in dirt!"
I pulled a small black remote from jacket.
I pressed the top silver button once firmly.
The large projection screens behind altar lit up.
The screens were meant for wedding photo slideshows.
Instead, high-definition bank audit files appeared display.
Red red highlight lines covered every financial transaction.
The heading read DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE FRAUD AUDIT.
Julian's voice cut off instantly in mid-sentence.
His eyes bulged as he recognized the files.
The files showed thirty million dollars in bribes.
Money stolen from naval base construction funds directly.
Richard's real estate firm built defective military piers.
They used cheap, rusted steel to save cash.
They pocketed millions while putting naval ships risk.
The entire wedding guest gallery began shouting loudly.
Corporate partners stood up from their tables panicked.
They saw their own company logos listed screen.
"What is the meaning of this, Richard?"
A wealthy investor at table one yelled out.
Richard looked at the giant screen in horror.
