Chapter 6 - The Senator's Secret
Among the wedding guests sat Senator Thomas Vance.
He was a powerful politician from our state.
He stood up from table two, stepping back.
He tried to slip out through back doors.
I turned my head and looked directly at him.
"Senator Vance, please remain in your seat," I.
The senator froze, his face turning ghost white.
He adjusted his expensive gold watch with shaking fingers.
"Admiral Bennett, I was merely an invited guest!"
Senator Vance claimed smoothly, putting up his hands.
"I have no involvement in Richard's business affairs!"
I tapped the black remote control button once more.
The giant projection screens changed to new files.
A secondary ledger displayed monthly cash wire transfers.
Five hundred thousand dollars transferred to Vance's account.
The money paid for his vote on naval contracts.
Gasps erupted across the crowded ballroom gallery again.
Reporters in attendance began taking photos frantically now.
Cameras flashed bright white lights in rapid succession.
Senator Vance covered his face with his leather folder.
The political scandal of the decade was exploding live.
"You took his money to ignore safety reports, Senator."
I stated, letting my voice carry across room.
"You put five thousand sailors in direct lethal danger."
"All for a luxury mountain estate in Aspen."
Two additional federal marshals stepped up to Vance.
They did not care about his political title today.
They forced his arms behind his back tightly.
Steel handcuffs clicked shut around the senator's wrists.
The senator hung his head in sheer total defeat.
Richard watched his political protector get handcuffed fast.
The last ray of hope left his eyes completely.
He realized there was no escape from this trap.
I stepped closer to my father, looking down.
"You told everyone I was a failure, Richard."
"You said nobody cared about my Navy career."
"But my career gave me the power to stop."
Richard opened his mouth to speak, but no words came.
His arrogance was completely dead and buried today.
