Chapter 14 - The Race to the Base

We boarded the military helicopter waiting at harbor pad.

The Blackhawk rotor blades spun rapidly in dark night.

We lifted off into the air, speeding toward base.

Below us, city lights flickered like small distant stars.

I checked the magazine clip of my sidearm weapon.

My mind raced through the list of senior officers.

Only five people held clearance to access my files.

Five flag officers sitting on the naval base board.

One of them was the traitor selling national defense secrets.

One of them was framing me to save himself.

"Pilot, maximum speed to Sector Four headquarters!" I.

The helicopter banked sharply over the dark ocean water.

Ten minutes later, we descended onto the base helipad.

Red emergency lights flashed across the concrete landing pad.

Armed military police officers surrounded the command building.

The base was placed on immediate high-security lockdown status.

I unhooked my seatbelt and leaped from helicopter doorway.

Commander Miller and six SEALs ran right behind me.

We kicked open the heavy double glass doors entrance.

Alarm sirens wailed loudly through the bright hallways.

"Where is the primary server room?" I shouted out.

"Sub-level two, Admiral!" the sergeant reported, saluting.

We sprinted down the concrete stairs toward sub-level two.

The heavy steel vault door was standing slightly ajar.

Electronic keypads flashed green, indicating recent card access.

I drew my sidearm, stepping carefully into room.

Inside, servers hummed loudly with bright green lights.

A figure stood near the master control terminal console.

He wore a white Navy admiral dress uniform jacket.

Four gold stars gleamed brightly on his wide shoulders.

He turned his head slowly to face my weapon.

My eyes widened in sheer, absolute, horrifying shock.

It was Vice Admiral Marcus, my oldest military mentor.

The man who had guided my Navy career for thirty.
