Chapter 5 - THE WOMAN WHO NEVER LEFT
Chelsea became a regular presence during Madeline’s second year of marriage.
At first, there was always a business reason.
She was designing Jason’s company website.
She was arranging investor events.
She was helping him prepare for a development conference.
Madeline tried not to be jealous.
Jason praised her for being “secure enough” to accept female friends.
Whenever Madeline questioned why Chelsea called after midnight, Jason kissed her forehead and said Chelsea lived for work.
Then Madeline became pregnant.
Jason cried when she showed him the test.
He carried her upstairs, laughed against her hair, and promised their child would have everything.
For several weeks, he became the man she had married again.
Then Chelsea began appearing more often.
Jason missed Madeline’s twenty-week ultrasound because of an emergency meeting in Chicago.
That evening, Chelsea posted a photograph from a hotel lounge.
She was holding champagne near a window.
In the reflection behind her, Madeline saw a man’s wrist resting on the table.
The silver watch belonged to Jason.
She confronted him when he returned.
He did not deny being in the hotel.
He denied being alone with Chelsea.
“There were twelve people at that meeting,” he said. “You’re zooming into reflections because pregnancy hormones are making you anxious.”
The words humiliated her.
Madeline apologized.
Jason accepted the apology as though he were the injured one.
Three days later, a message arrived from an unknown number.
Some women carry babies. Others carry power.
Attached was a picture of Chelsea sitting behind Jason’s desk.
Madeline showed him.
Jason laughed.
“She’s trying to make you jealous. Don’t give her what she wants.”
“Why would she want that?”
“Because she’s lonely.”
That night, Jason slept peacefully.
Madeline remained awake beside him, replaying his answer.
He had not asked why Chelsea was behind his desk.
He had not seemed surprised by the message.
And when he turned in his sleep, Madeline noticed a faint scratch across his shoulder.
