Chapter 1 - THE GLASS PRISON

The metal bar came down again.

CRACK!

The windshield of the black sedan collapsed inward, sending glittering fragments across Madeline Reed’s lap.

Seven months pregnant, she curled over her stomach and screamed.

Outside the car, Chelsea Vaughn stood on the roof in gray heels, smiling as if she were posing for a magazine cover instead of terrorizing an unborn child.

“He’s mine,” Chelsea said.

She lifted the bar again.

Jason Reed stood beside the ruined vehicle in his navy suit, his hands in his pockets. He didn’t tell Chelsea to stop.

He smirked.

Three police officers had arrived seconds earlier. One shouted for Chelsea to drop the weapon, but Jason raised both hands and spoke over him.

“My wife is unstable,” he said. “She locked herself in there. She’s been threatening us all afternoon.”

Madeline pressed the broken window switch again.

Nothing.

She pulled the door handle.

It moved without resistance, disconnected from the lock.

Jason bent toward the shattered glass.

“Don’t make this worse,” he whispered.

On the back seat, the infant carrier Madeline had bought that morning lay split open. Chelsea had smashed it before climbing onto the roof.

Madeline’s ultrasound photograph had fallen beneath her feet.

She reached down, trembling, and picked it up.

Then her phone lit beneath the broken glass.

A notification appeared from the mansion’s security system.

The cameras Madeline had secretly reactivated had uploaded everything—Chelsea destroying the infant carrier, Jason locking the doors remotely, and both of them laughing while Madeline begged to be released.

One officer touched the body camera on his chest. His expression changed as the footage reached the police network.

Madeline looked through the fractured windshield.

“You forgot the cameras,” she said.

Jason’s smile disappeared.

Behind the officers, a black government SUV rolled through the mansion gates.

Chelsea lowered the metal bar.

The SUV stopped.

Its rear door opened.

Madeline placed one protective hand over her unborn daughter and looked directly at Jason.

“You picked the wrong family.”

Jason turned toward the vehicle—and went completely pale.

👉 The man stepping from the SUV had not spoken yet, but Jason already knew his carefully constructed life was beginning to collapse.
