Chapter 16 - THE VOICE IN THE COURTROOM
The preliminary hearing drew reporters from across the state.
Jason entered wearing a dark suit and the expression of a man who still believed appearance could save him.
Chelsea sat at a separate table.
She did not look at him.
Jason’s attorney described the driveway attack as a chaotic domestic argument.
He claimed Jason had modified the locks for security reasons.
He claimed Chelsea brought the metal bar without his knowledge.
Then he suggested Madeline’s pregnancy had intensified her emotional reactions.
Samuel’s hands tightened in the gallery.
Madeline remained still.
When she took the witness stand, Jason looked at her with the same gentle expression he once used after nightmares about her mother.
“Maddie,” he whispered.
The prosecutor objected.
The judge warned him not to address the witness.
Madeline described the locked doors, the shattered glass, and the infant carrier being destroyed while Jason watched.
The defense asked why she had remained with Jason if she feared him.
“I didn’t understand that I was being isolated,” she said. “He made every warning look like an attack on our marriage.”
“Did you ever raise your voice at him?”
“Yes.”
“Did you accuse him of affairs?”
“Yes.”
“Were you angry?”
Madeline looked directly at the jury box.
“Anger does not make a woman incompetent. Fear does not make her dishonest. And trusting her husband does not make her responsible for his crimes.”
The courtroom became silent.
The prosecutor played the security footage.
Jason’s hand pressed the remote.
The locks clicked.
Chelsea raised the bar.
Then Jason’s voice came from the speakers.
“Keep her inside until she signs.”
Jason lowered his head.
Chelsea began crying.
The prosecutor played the final recovered message.
Keep going until she breaks.
Madeline looked at the man she had once loved.
“I didn’t break,” she said.
