Chapter 11 - THE SCENE THEY THOUGHT THEY CONTROLLED
Chelsea struck the windshield again and again.
Each blow sent fractures racing across the glass.
Madeline hunched over her stomach.
One officer moved toward the car, but Jason shouted that Madeline might have a weapon beneath the seat.
The officers could not see her hands clearly through the shattered windshield.
“Show us your hands!” one officer called.
Madeline raised both hands, then immediately returned one to her stomach as another contraction tightened across her body.
“I’m pregnant!” she screamed. “He disabled the doors!”
Chelsea smashed the rear window.
Then she reached inside and pulled the infant carrier toward her.
Madeline watched helplessly as Chelsea threw it onto the driveway.
Chelsea brought the metal bar down on the carrier.
Once.
Twice.
Jason’s mouth curved into a smile.
That was the moment Madeline understood there was no version of her marriage worth saving.
Her husband was watching someone destroy the seat intended for his daughter.
And he was enjoying it.
Beneath the broken glass, Madeline’s phone flashed.
Rebecca had configured the system to forward emergency footage directly to law enforcement when violent motion was detected.
The video began appearing on the nearest officer’s tablet.
Chelsea destroying the carrier.
Jason pressing the remote.
Jason telling Chelsea, “Keep her inside until she signs.”
The officer looked at Jason differently.
Madeline lifted the ultrasound picture from the seat.
“You forgot the cameras.”
At the precinct, the footage reached Captain Ruiz.
He opened the emergency property report and saw Madeline’s maiden name.
Bennett.
He immediately called the commissioner’s office.
Minutes later, the black SUV entered the gates.
Samuel stepped out.
His first sight was not of Jason, Chelsea, or the officers.
It was his daughter’s blood-speckled hand pressed against broken glass.
Chelsea’s smile disappeared.
Jason’s entire body stiffened.
“You picked the wrong family,” Madeline told him.
It was not a threat.
It was a fact.
Because Jason had spent years convincing her that her father had abandoned her.
