Chapter 2 - THE MAN FROM THE SUV

Police Commissioner Samuel Bennett stepped onto the driveway.
He was not wearing a ceremonial uniform. He wore a dark coat over a white shirt, as though someone had pulled him away from an ordinary Saturday afternoon.
But there was nothing ordinary in his eyes when he saw his pregnant daughter trapped inside the destroyed car.
“Madeline.”
Her name came out like a broken breath.
Chelsea stepped down from the roof, suddenly careful.
“This is a private family disagreement,” she said. “She attacked me first.”
Commissioner Bennett looked at the officer nearest him.
“Are your body cameras recording?”
“Yes, sir.”
“Good. Keep them running. Follow procedure.”
He did not order an arrest. He did not threaten anyone.
He simply made sure no one could erase what happened next.
The officers surrounded Chelsea and ordered her to release the metal bar. When she dropped it, they handcuffed her.
Jason moved toward Madeline’s door.
“I’ll get my wife out.”
“No,” Madeline said through the broken window.
A firefighter placed a protective shield between her and the remaining glass. Another responder reached through the rear window and opened the door from the inside.
But the handle still failed.
A mechanic from the emergency team crouched near the driver’s side.
“This wasn’t a normal lock malfunction,” he said. “The internal cable has been removed.”
Jason stopped moving.
Commissioner Bennett heard him.
So did the body cameras.
The responders carefully cut through the damaged locking mechanism. When the door finally opened, Madeline tried to stand.
A sharp pain crossed her abdomen.
She doubled over.
Samuel reached for her, but a paramedic stepped between them and supported her weight.
“She’s contracting.”
Jason’s face changed.
For one moment, he looked frightened.
Then he looked toward the mansion, as if calculating what the police might find inside.
Madeline was placed on a stretcher.
Jason attempted to follow.
She gripped the paramedic’s sleeve.
“Don’t let him near me,” she whispered. “And don’t let him near my baby.”
The officers immediately separated Jason from the ambulance.
As Madeline was lifted inside, the emergency mechanic held up a severed cable from beneath the dashboard.
“This was cut with a tool,” he told the detective. “Recently.”
Jason stared at it.
Commissioner Bennett stared at Jason.
The ruined car was no longer evidence of an angry mistress losing control.

It was evidence of planning.
👉 At the hospital, investigators would discover that the disabled doors were only one part of a trap prepared days earlier.
