Chapter 14 - ELEANOR’S SAFEGUARD

Rebecca uncovered the final pages of the trust.
“Your mother founded Bennett Meridian with your grandfather,” she explained. “The trustees have managed your voting shares since her death.”
Madeline knew that much.
What she did not know was why Eleanor had delayed the transfer of full control.
Eleanor feared that grief would make her daughter vulnerable to someone who wanted access to the company.
So she created a two-stage trust.
Madeline received the income immediately.
But the voting control would vest permanently when Madeline became a mother or turned thirty-five, whichever came first.
Grace’s birth would activate it.
“That’s what Jason discovered,” Rebecca said. “He believed your marriage would allow him to pressure you into granting him a permanent proxy.”
“Would it have worked?”
“Only if you signed willingly.”
Rebecca pointed to a clause Jason had overlooked.
Any attempt by a spouse to obtain control through fraud, threats, confinement, or coercion would immediately cancel that spouse’s financial benefits and trigger an independent forensic audit.
Jason believed the baby was his opportunity.
Eleanor had designed the baby’s arrival as a shield.
Madeline pressed both hands over her stomach.
Her mother had been gone for four years, yet she had still found a way to protect her daughter.
“There’s more,” Rebecca said.
The investigators had compared the unsigned proxy Jason gave Madeline with a second document found on his computer.
The second version contained Madeline’s signature.
It was a forgery.
Jason had already submitted it to a private lender as proof that he would soon control Bennett Meridian’s voting shares.
Using that promise, he borrowed millions.
The money had funded Chelsea’s companies, Jason’s failing developments, and the lifestyle he used to impress investors.
If Madeline refused to sign the real proxy, the fraud would collapse.
That was why they were out of time.
The car attack was not an impulsive act born from jealousy.
It was the desperate end of a financial conspiracy.
Samuel stood silently near the window.
Madeline looked at the forged signature.
“I want every document preserved,” she said. “Every message. Every transfer.”
Rebecca nodded.
“And Jason?”
Madeline’s voice did not shake.
“He wanted everyone to believe I couldn’t speak for myself.”
She looked at the detective.

“I’m ready to speak.”
👉 Before Madeline testified, Chelsea offered investigators a deal—and exposed the cruel truth about how Jason had chosen his wife.
