Chapter 15 - THE WOMAN HE CHOSE FIRST
Chelsea lasted less than forty-eight hours in custody before turning on Jason.
She claimed the car attack had been his idea.
Jason claimed Chelsea had acted out of jealousy.
Then Chelsea’s attorney delivered an encrypted archive containing five years of messages.
The earliest conversation was dated three months before Jason met Madeline.
Chelsea: Are you sure she’ll attend the gala?
Jason: Her mother just died. She’ll be there for the foundation.
Chelsea: And you know what to say?
Jason: I know what grief looks like.
Madeline stopped reading.
The staircase at the charity gala returned to her memory.
Jason carrying a plate of food.
Jason asking about her mother.
Jason listening with perfect patience.
None of it had been spontaneous.
He and Chelsea had studied Madeline’s schedule, her interests, and even the charities Eleanor supported.
Jason approached her deliberately.
Chelsea agreed to remain hidden until he secured access to the Bennett fortune.
In exchange, Jason promised they would eventually be together publicly.
For years, Chelsea accepted hotel rooms, secret trips, and consulting payments because she believed Madeline was temporary.
When Madeline became pregnant, Chelsea panicked.
The baby made the trust transfer imminent.
Chelsea began sending messages and humiliating Madeline, hoping she would leave Jason before gaining full control.
Jason had tried to manage both women.
He told Madeline that Chelsea was obsessed.
He told Chelsea that Madeline was unstable.
He told each one that the other was the problem.
But the archive did not excuse Chelsea.
One message showed her suggesting they destroy the infant carrier to frighten Madeline.
Another showed Jason replying:
Do whatever it takes. Just make her sign.
The final message had been sent during the attack.
Jason: Keep going until she breaks.
Madeline placed the tablet down.
She no longer felt confused.
She felt clear.
Jason had not fallen in love and then betrayed her.
He had entered her life carrying the betrayal with him.
