Chapter 13 - THE UNSTABLE WIFE
Owen Price had served as Jason’s financial director for almost three years.
He met Madeline in a private hospital conference room with two detectives present.
“I should have contacted you sooner,” he said.
He looked exhausted.
Owen explained that Jason had diverted money from Bennett Meridian subsidiaries into consulting firms owned by Chelsea.
When Owen objected, Jason fired him and threatened to accuse him of embezzlement.
But Owen had retained copies of the original ledgers.
The stolen money was only one part of the plan.
Jason had also created a private folder titled M.R. CAPACITY.
Inside were recordings of Madeline crying after her mother’s death, photographs taken while she slept during pregnancy, and edited clips of arguments.
In every file, Jason removed the moments that showed what he had done before Madeline reacted.
“He wanted to portray you as emotionally unstable,” Owen said.
“For what?”
“To request temporary control of your voting rights after the baby was born.”
Jason had drafted letters for doctors Madeline had never met. He had written statements claiming she was paranoid, impulsive, and incapable of managing complex financial decisions.
Chelsea had helped collect the recordings.
Madeline remembered the anonymous messages, the white dress at the baby shower, and the photograph from Chicago.
They had been provoking her deliberately.
Every time she cried or questioned Jason, he saved the reaction as evidence.
“Why attack me in the car?” she asked.
Owen shook his head.
“That wasn’t the original plan. They needed you frightened and angry on video, not injured.”
Chelsea had escalated the confrontation.
But Jason had locked the doors.
He had provided the metal bar.
He had stood beside the car and allowed it to continue.
The detective opened an audio file recovered from Chelsea’s phone.
Her voice filled the room.
“You promised the baby would make the transfer automatic.”
Jason replied, “It does, unless she gives someone else control first.”
The recording ended.
Madeline looked at Rebecca.
“What transfer?”
Rebecca placed Eleanor Bennett’s trust document on the table.
