Chapter 17 - THE CLAIM THAT FAILED
Jason’s civil attorneys filed an emergency claim against the Bennett trust.
They argued that because Jason and Madeline were married when the voting rights vested, he was entitled to a marital interest.
The filing was designed to freeze the company and pressure Madeline into a private settlement.
Jason offered to withdraw the claim if she reduced her cooperation with prosecutors.
The message reached her through his attorney.
Rebecca read it aloud.
Madeline almost smiled.
“He’s still trying to make me sign something.”
This time, she was not alone.
The trust’s anti-coercion clause activated the moment investigators confirmed the forged proxy and the vehicle confinement.
Every benefit assigned to Jason was revoked.
The independent audit also identified the loans he obtained using Madeline’s forged signature.
The lenders turned over their records to federal investigators.
Jason’s civil claim did not merely fail.
It provided additional evidence of motive.
During the hearing, Rebecca presented Eleanor’s original notarized instructions.
The judge ruled that Jason had no ownership interest in the trust and no authority over Bennett Meridian.
The mansion, vehicles, and company shares remained Madeline’s separate property.
Jason’s attorney asked for time to appeal.
The judge denied his request to restrict Madeline’s control.
Outside the courthouse, reporters called her name.
For years, Jason had described her as a sheltered heiress incapable of leading.
Madeline stepped toward the microphones.
“My mother did not build a company so that someone could take it through deception,” she said. “The employees who kept that company alive deserve stability, and they will have it.”
She announced an independent board review and repayment plan for every division harmed by Jason’s fraud.
Owen Price agreed to assist the auditors.
Employees who feared losing their jobs received written protection.
Madeline did not simply reclaim her inheritance.
She protected everyone Jason had placed at risk.
That evening, as she left Rebecca’s office, pain tightened across her abdomen.
