Chapter 8 - The Story Adrian Built Around Her
Elena met Claire and Miriam before dawn.
She carried a company laptop and a folder she had hidden inside her car.
For nearly a year, Adrian had instructed senior executives to exclude Claire from meetings because she was supposedly undergoing treatment for emotional instability.
He said the separation had triggered obsessive behavior.
He claimed Claire had threatened Celeste.
None of it was true.
The folder contained draft talking points prepared for the merger announcement.
If Claire challenged the transaction, executives were instructed to describe her as a bitter former spouse with no current understanding of Halcyon’s business.
Another document suggested requesting a temporary restraining order if Claire appeared at company headquarters.
Celeste had edited the language herself.
“Why didn’t you tell me?” Claire asked Elena.
“I tried to contact Northstar,” Elena said. “Peter Lang intercepted everything.”
She had raised concerns after discovering that Ardent’s valuation excluded several new patents.
Those patents alone could generate hundreds of millions in future licensing revenue.
Celeste ordered her to adjust the forecast.
When Elena refused, Adrian warned her that Northstar supported the lower valuation.
Then he offered her a retention bonus if she remained silent until closing.
Elena declined.
She began copying records.
The most damaging file was an internal presentation titled PROJECT CLEAN EXIT.
It described how to remove obstacles before the merger.
Claire was listed as Obstacle One.
Employee option holders were Obstacle Two.
The independent audit committee was Obstacle Three.
For Claire, the plan recommended:
Maintain divorce narrative.
Limit system access.
Establish emotional instability.
Prepare civil order if she appears.
Obtain Northstar consent through authorized representative.
Claire shut the laptop.
The affair was painful.
The planning was colder.
Adrian had spent months preparing to make every truthful objection sound like jealousy or mental instability.
“He knew people would believe the calm executive over the emotional wife,” Claire said.
Elena nodded.
“That is why I saved the records before the party.”
At seven thirty, the audit committee issued preservation demands to Ardent, Peter Lang, Celeste, and Adrian.
Peter attempted to board an international flight.
Federal agents stopped him at the airport after bank investigators flagged the payment.
He requested an attorney.
