The Luxembourg account contained $9.2 million.
Ardent had not completed the merger.
Yet funds had already been transferred through consulting companies.
Investigators traced the money to an investment group secretly purchasing Halcyon shares from employees.
Those employees believed they were selling to an independent buyer.
The true buyers were Adrian, Celeste, and an Ardent executive.
They expected Halcyon’s share price to rise after the merger announcement.
Even if the full acquisition failed, they planned to profit from information ordinary shareholders did not possess.
The transactions created potential securities-fraud charges.
Celeste claimed Adrian controlled the account.
Adrian claimed Celeste negotiated every transfer.
Their messages showed both participated.
The engagement began to look less like romance and more like an alliance built around money, ambition, and secrecy.
Claire attended one settlement conference with Adrian.
He looked exhausted.
His tailored suits no longer fit as perfectly.
“I made mistakes,” he said.
“You committed fraud.”
“I believed the merger was necessary.”
“You were being paid to undervalue the company.”
“I deserved more than Northstar allowed me.”
“Northstar paid you millions.”
“It never gave me control.”
Claire studied him.
“That is what this was always about.”
Adrian leaned back.
“I spent ten years standing in front of investors while you remained invisible.”
“I never stopped you from receiving credit for your work.”
“You owned everything.”
“You knew the company’s ownership from the beginning.”
“I did not know you were Northstar.”
“Would it have changed how you treated me?”
He did not answer.
Claire understood the answer anyway.
Had Adrian known she personally controlled eighty-three percent, he might have remained attentive.
Not because he respected her.
Because he feared losing access.
That realization removed the final temptation to repair the marriage.
Adrian offered to testify against Celeste if Claire asked Halcyon to withdraw its civil claims.
Claire refused.
Celeste offered to testify against Adrian if the board restored part of her equity.
The board refused.
Neither had loyalty left when loyalty no longer paid.
The prosecutor prepared indictments.
Miriam called Claire late that evening.
“There is one more document.”
Adrian had created a revised will.
It left nearly everything to Celeste.
