Chapter 4 - The Divorce That Never Existed

Adrian rented Claire an apartment near the Halcyon research campus.

He called it a fresh start.

He told her that living separately would reduce pressure while they attended counseling.

The counseling appointments were repeatedly postponed.

A board meeting appeared.

Then a merger conference.

Then Celeste needed Adrian in London.

Claire noticed that company invitations began arriving without spouse information.

Several executives stopped asking about Adrian.

At an industry dinner, a director offered Claire sympathy “after the divorce.”

Claire corrected him.

“We’re separated. Nothing has been filed.”

The director looked embarrassed.

“I must have misunderstood.”

Adrian dismissed it as gossip.

But the same misunderstanding followed Claire into every company room.

Celeste introduced herself to investors as the woman helping Adrian rebuild his life after a difficult marriage.

One afternoon, Claire visited Halcyon without warning.

Her executive badge no longer opened the main offices.

Security said her access had been changed at Adrian’s request.

He came downstairs twenty minutes later.

“You should have called.”

“I founded this company.”

“You work remotely now.”

“That was never agreed.”

Adrian lowered his voice.

“Claire, people are uncomfortable when personal conflict enters the workplace.”

“What personal conflict?”

“You questioning Celeste. Appearing without notice. Correcting people when they refer to our divorce.”

“Because there is no divorce.”

He looked toward the security desk.

“Not here.”

That evening, Claire called Miriam.

She asked whether any divorce filing existed under her name.

Miriam found nothing.

She also discovered that Adrian’s attorney had requested draft documents but never submitted them.

Claire wanted to confront him immediately.

Miriam advised patience.

“Someone who lies about a completed divorce may be hiding more than an affair.”

Claire began preserving emails, access changes, and board notices.

She did not yet activate Clause Seventeen.

Part of her still hoped Adrian was lost rather than cruel.

He called the following week.

He sounded almost like the man she had married.

“Our anniversary is coming,” he said. “Maybe we should finally talk.”

Claire asked whether he meant it.

“Yes.”

She bought two tickets to Paris, where they had spent their honeymoon.

She ordered red roses.

Then Adrian’s assistant accidentally forwarded her an internal invitation.
