Chapter 16 - The Cost of the Perfect Announcement
Federal prosecutors charged Adrian, Celeste, Peter Lang, and the Ardent executive with conspiracy, securities fraud, wire fraud, and falsifying corporate records.
Peter pleaded guilty and testified.
The banker who moved the Luxembourg funds also cooperated.
Celeste initially insisted she had been deceived by Adrian.
Prosecutors displayed her messages negotiating the secret equity grant and instructing Peter to impersonate Northstar’s counsel.
She eventually accepted a plea agreement.
Adrian went to trial.
His defense portrayed Claire as a controlling wife who used hidden ownership to destroy him after discovering his affair.
Claire testified for six hours.
Adrian’s attorney asked why she kept Northstar secret from her husband.
“To protect inherited assets and company governance.”
“Did secrecy give you power over him?”
“No. The shareholder agreement gave Northstar power over executives who committed misconduct.”
“You activated it within minutes of seeing him with another woman.”
“The documents had been under investigation for weeks. The engagement publicly confirmed an undisclosed executive conflict and prevented the parties from destroying more evidence.”
The attorney held up the Paris tickets.
“You were angry.”
“Yes.”
“Heartbroken?”
“Yes.”
“Jealous?”
Claire looked at Adrian.
“I was betrayed. That does not make the forged approvals authentic.”
The courtroom became still.
The prosecution presented the false divorce, the merger consent, the offshore account, and PROJECT CLEAN EXIT.
Employees testified that Adrian spread false claims about Claire’s mental stability.
Elena described pressure to manipulate valuations.
Miriam explained Clause Seventeen.
The jury convicted Adrian on every major count.
Celeste received prison time, financial penalties, and a permanent ban from serving as an officer of a public company.
Adrian received a longer sentence because he directed the forged shareholder consent and attempted to move marital assets.
The court ordered restitution to Halcyon and affected shareholders.
At sentencing, Adrian looked at Claire.
“I did love you.”
Claire believed he once had.
That was what made his choices tragic rather than mysterious.
“You loved me when my gifts felt like yours,” she said. “You stopped loving me when my boundaries reminded you they weren’t.”
Deputies led him away.
