Chapter 17 - The Tickets in the Drawer

Claire kept the Paris tickets inside her desk for nearly a year.
They became useless after the departure date passed.
Still, she did not throw them away.
They represented the woman who entered Halcyon carrying hope.
Claire did not feel ashamed of that woman.
Trust was not stupidity.
Love was not weakness.
The shame belonged to the people who exploited both.
Her divorce became final fourteen months after the engagement party.
There was no celebration.
Claire signed the papers in Miriam’s office and sat quietly afterward.
“You are free,” Miriam said.
“I was legally free the moment he decided I no longer deserved the truth.”
Miriam placed a new envelope on the table.
Inside were two open-dated tickets to Paris.
Claire stared at her.
“I am not going on your honeymoon,” Miriam said. “Your mother is.”
June had recovered well enough to travel but had never visited Europe.
For decades, she postponed every dream to care for other people.
Claire called her.
June immediately refused.
“I’m not replacing Adrian on an anniversary trip.”
“It isn’t an anniversary trip anymore.”
“What is it?”
Claire looked at the expired tickets.
“A reminder that plans can belong to someone new.”
June eventually agreed.
Before leaving, Claire visited the atrium one last time.
A new employee exhibition displayed Halcyon’s history.
Her first patent notebook appeared beside photographs of the original engineering team.
Adrian’s role was included accurately.
Not erased.
Not exaggerated.
Claire insisted on that.
Truth did not require rewriting him into nothing.
He had helped build Halcyon.
He had also tried to steal it.
Both facts could exist.
At reception, the dried roses were gone.
In their place stood a small arrangement from the engineering department.
The card read:
To the founder who came back through the front door.
Claire smiled.
One year earlier, she entered the building as the supposedly discarded wife.

Now she left as a respected founder who no longer needed secrecy to feel safe.
👉 Claire had reclaimed her company and her name, but Paris would help her reclaim the future Adrian had reduced to two wasted tickets.
