Bank investigators traced payments from Halcyon consulting accounts to a luxury apartment in Manhattan.
The apartment was leased through a company controlled by Adrian’s sister.
Adrian and Celeste had used it for more than a year.
Halcyon paid the rent under the description “executive merger housing.”
There had been no authorized reason for the company to maintain the property.
Furniture, travel, jewelry, and private dinners were also charged through advisory accounts.
The total exceeded $3.4 million.
Claire visited the apartment only once, accompanied by court officers retrieving marital records.
She found photographs of Adrian and Celeste on a shelf.
Paris.
Rome.
Monaco.
He had traveled to every place he claimed he was attending board conferences.
Inside a desk drawer, Claire discovered a sealed envelope addressed to her.
It contained an unsigned divorce settlement dated fourteen months earlier.
Adrian had prepared it but never delivered it.
Under the proposed terms, Claire would waive claims to Halcyon management and confirm that Northstar belonged to unrelated investors.
In exchange, she would receive the apartment she already owned before marriage and a one-time payment of $500,000.
Adrian had valued her silence at less than one month of his expected merger reward.
Beside the settlement was a note in Celeste’s handwriting:

Claire sat down.
The phrase connected the corporate plan to the campaign describing her as emotionally unstable.
If Claire refused the settlement, Adrian intended to argue that she lacked the capacity to participate in company decisions.

Both claimed Claire behaved irrationally at work.
Neither executive had seen Claire in more than a year.
When questioned, one admitted Adrian offered him a promotion.
The other immediately withdrew his statement.
Claire understood the design.
Adrian wanted her signature.
If he could not obtain it, he wanted her credibility destroyed.
The same man who once encouraged Claire to believe in her own intelligence had spent months preparing to tell the world she could not trust her mind.
