Chapter 10 - The Boardroom Without Applause

The emergency board meeting lasted six hours.
There were no balloons.
No champagne.
No applause.
Forensic accountants traced the false Northstar consent to Adrian’s executive terminal.
Security records showed Celeste entering his office the night it was uploaded.
Adrian claimed she acted alone.
Celeste produced messages in which he wrote:
Use whatever Northstar needs. Claire will never know until it is finished.
Another message referred to the false divorce.
Once the settlement is in the data room, Ardent will stop asking questions.
Adrian turned toward Celeste.
“You said those messages were protected.”
She laughed without humor.
“You told me your wife was irrelevant.”
The board questioned them separately.
Adrian insisted he deserved compensation because he had built Halcyon’s business relationships.
He argued that Claire contributed technology but abandoned leadership.
Claire waited until he finished.
Then she opened the first patent notebook.
Her handwriting covered every page.
She displayed the licensing agreements she negotiated before Adrian recruited a single sales executive.
She showed the original seed transfer from Northstar.
She showed the capitalization table.
“Halcyon exists because I invented the platform and financed the company,” she said. “Adrian helped build it. He was rewarded with salary, equity, authority, and public credit.”
Adrian’s face tightened.
“Without me, you would still be hiding in a laboratory.”
“Without me, there would be nothing for you to sell.”
The board voted to terminate Celeste for cause.
Her unvested shares were canceled.
Her severance disappeared under the misconduct provisions.
Adrian was removed as executive chairman and placed on unpaid suspension pending the fraud investigation.
He lost access to the company car, executive residence, and all corporate accounts.
The merger with Ardent was formally rejected.
Ardent’s board opened its own investigation.
Before security escorted Adrian from the building, he approached Claire.
“You planned this.”
“I planned Paris.”
He looked at the tickets in her hand.
For the first time, shame crossed his face.
Claire continued.
“You planned everything else.”
As Adrian entered the elevator, employees watched from the same atrium where they had celebrated his engagement.

No one clapped.
👉 Adrian lost his title in the building he claimed to own, but he still believed marriage entitled him to part of Claire’s $558 million stake.
