Chapter 1 - The Engagement She Walked Into

Claire Bennett entered the glass atrium of Halcyon Dynamics carrying twelve red roses and two tickets to Paris.
She expected to surprise her husband.
Instead, she watched him kiss another woman.
Silver and red balloons floated above hundreds of employees. Champagne glasses glittered beneath the atrium lights. At the center of the celebration, Adrian Vale stood in a navy suit with one arm around Celeste Monroe, Halcyon’s glamorous CEO.
A diamond ring shone on Celeste’s raised hand.
The entire company applauded.
Then someone noticed Claire at the entrance.
The cheering faded row by row.
Adrian slowly pulled away from Celeste.
“Claire… this isn’t what it looks like.”
Claire looked at the ring.
Then at the roses she had bought for their tenth anniversary.
The Paris tickets were tucked inside the bouquet.
Adrian approached as if he could quietly remove her from the room.
Claire stepped back.
“We never filed.”
His face tightened.
Several employees exchanged confused looks.
For eighteen months, Adrian had introduced Claire as his former wife. He had claimed their divorce was finalized privately.
There had never been a divorce.
Celeste kept one hand on Adrian’s chest.
“This is a company event. Whatever personal misunderstanding you have can wait.”
Claire placed the roses on the reception desk.
She removed her phone and sent four words to attorney Miriam Shaw.
Activate Clause Seventeen.
Celeste’s smile faltered.
“So do shareholders,” Claire said.
Across the city, Miriam opened the Northstar Capital file.
The screen displayed:

Delegated Voting Authority: Revocable.
Estimated Value: $558,000,000.
Miriam signed the emergency notice.
“Serve it tonight.”
Phones began vibrating throughout the atrium.
Celeste opened her email.
Her face turned white.
Adrian grabbed the screen from her hand.
MANAGEMENT AUTHORITY REVOKED BY MAJORITY SHAREHOLDER.
A second alert appeared on Adrian’s phone.
JOINT ACCOUNTS RESTRICTED BY COURT ORDER.
“What did you do?” Celeste whispered.
Claire picked up the Paris tickets but left the roses behind.
She turned toward the glass doors.

Behind her, the party went completely silent.
