Chapter 8 - The Red Dress He Chose
When Vanessa arrived home, Grant was already there.
The silver suitcase was gone.
He kissed her cheek and handed her a garment box.
Inside was a black gown.
It was elegant, expensive and severe.
Vanessa had chosen a deep red dress for the gala weeks earlier. Caroline had always worn red at foundation events because she believed courage should be visible.
Grant lifted the black gown.
“I thought this would be more appropriate.”
“For what?”
“Tomorrow’s announcement.”
Vanessa looked at him.
“What announcement?”
He smiled.
“You’ll see.”
The dress resembled mourning clothes.
Grant did not want her to appear powerful.
He wanted the audience to see a grieving, exhausted woman quietly surrendering her place.
Vanessa touched the fabric.
“It’s beautiful.”
His shoulders relaxed.
“I knew you’d understand.”
He went upstairs to shower.
Vanessa immediately called the event team.
“Keep my original red dress in the private dressing room,” she instructed. “Do not place my name on the public schedule.”
The event director hesitated.
“Mr. Reed changed the screen package this afternoon.”
“What did he add?”
“A tribute video about your mother, followed by an announcement titled ‘The Next Heartbeat.’”
Vanessa felt sick.
Grant intended to use Caroline’s memory as the emotional backdrop for his takeover.
“Can we control the screens from the secondary booth?”
“Yes, but Grant ordered all changes routed through Elise.”
“Not anymore.”
Vanessa forwarded Evelyn’s written authorization giving the board control of the audiovisual system.
Marcus arranged discreet security positions around every exit.
Naomi secured emergency authority to preserve the silver suitcase if Elise brought it onto foundation property.
No one would touch Grant before he spoke.
No one would stop Elise before she presented the documents.
The trap depended on allowing them to complete enough of their plan that denial would become impossible.
Before bed, Grant reached for Vanessa.
She moved away.
“I’m tired.”
He studied her face.
Then he smiled into the darkness.
“After tomorrow, you’ll never have to worry about the foundation again.”
Vanessa stared at the ceiling.
He thought he was comforting her.

Instead, he had just confirmed everything.
👉 Grant chose a dress designed to make Vanessa look defeated, unaware that she planned to enter the gala wearing her mother’s color.
