Chapter 7 - Tomorrow Night, Then
Vanessa had gone to the airport to surprise Grant.
He had claimed he was returning alone from a donor meeting in New York. She brought the watch Caroline had given him on their wedding day, newly repaired after years in a drawer.
Vanessa thought returning it might help them remember who they had once been.
Instead, she saw Elise in his arms.
The tulips were Caroline’s favorite flowers.
Grant knew that.
He had not bought them for his wife in six years.
When Vanessa’s phone displayed his message, something inside her became still.
Tomorrow night, I want you to feel special.
She photographed them.
Then she noticed the archive case.
After sending the image to Evelyn, Naomi and Marcus, Vanessa watched Grant hand Elise the suitcase.
“Keep this with you until the presentation,” he said.
Elise glanced around.
“What if Vanessa sees it?”
“She won’t be at the airport.”
“And tomorrow?”
Grant smiled.
“Tomorrow she’ll be sitting at our table while I explain why she can’t lead anymore.”
Vanessa activated her phone’s voice recorder from behind the pillar.
The airport noise swallowed several words, but Grant’s final sentence was clear.
“She’ll be too humiliated to fight us in front of everyone.”
Vanessa stopped recording.
Her hands shook once.
Then they became steady.
She deleted the loving message she had prepared for Grant.
She placed Caroline’s repaired watch back inside her purse.
And she sent one final instruction to the secret group chat.
Hold the doors tomorrow night. Let him speak first.
Grant believed public humiliation would silence her.
He had forgotten that Vanessa had spent fifteen years speaking for families on the worst days of their lives.
