Chapter 16 - The Payment Made from Their Marriage
Vanessa entered the date.
The ledger opened.
More than eight million dollars had moved through Grant’s network over five years.
Some money paid for Elise’s apartment, luxury travel and the CardiaBridge shell organization.
Some funded Malcolm’s son’s company.
The largest payment went to a trust labeled RWH Domestic Services.
Vanessa did not recognize the name.
Naomi traced it to Rachel Whitmore Hale, the attorney who had prepared Vanessa and Grant’s postnuptial agreement three years earlier.
Rachel had represented Vanessa.
Or so Vanessa believed.
The agreement included a clause granting Grant temporary voting authority if Vanessa became medically or emotionally unable to perform her duties.
Rachel had described it as a standard marital protection.
Grant had paid her six hundred thousand dollars before the agreement was signed.
She had deliberately hidden language designed to help him seize control.
The betrayal reached into Vanessa’s bedroom, her marriage and every private fear she had ever shared with her attorney.
Rachel also provided Grant with confidential information about the Hawthorne trust.
But Caroline’s separate schedule had never been stored in Rachel’s file.
That was why Grant knew enough to attempt the transfer but not enough to complete it legally.
Federal investigators arrested Rachel for conspiracy, fraud and breach of fiduciary duty.
Malcolm resigned and later surrendered himself.
Elise turned over messages proving Grant had planned to portray her as a reckless employee if anything failed.
Their romance collapsed within hours.
During questioning, Grant insisted Vanessa had neglected him for the foundation.
He called the affair a consequence of loneliness.
He called the stolen money compensation for years spent building another family’s legacy.
Vanessa listened to a recording of the interview only once.
Grant had always needed to believe he was the victim.
It was how he justified taking whatever he wanted.
She stopped the recording when he said:
“Without me, Vanessa would still be a grieving daughter with a checkbook.”
Vanessa looked around the foundation her mother inspired and she had spent fifteen years building.
Grant had mistaken access for creation.
He had mistaken her trust for dependence.
