Chapter 19 - The Same Flight Board
One year after the betrayal, Vanessa returned to Charlotte Douglas International Airport.
She was traveling to open a mobile cardiac clinic in a rural county that had waited nearly two years for funding.
The same blue-and-yellow flight board flickered above the terminal.
The same concrete pillar stood near the arrivals area.
Vanessa stopped beside it.
For a moment, she could see herself as she had been that night.
Pressed against the cold concrete.
Holding her breath.
Watching Grant kiss Elise while believing her entire life had collapsed.
A little girl nearby dropped a stuffed rabbit.
Vanessa picked it up and handed it back.
The child’s mother recognized her.
“You’re Vanessa Hawthorne.”
Vanessa smiled.
“Reed is no longer part of my name.”
The woman apologized.
Then she explained that the foundation had paid for her daughter’s heart surgery.
“She starts kindergarten next month,” the mother said. “I don’t know how to thank you.”
The girl hugged the rabbit to her chest.
“You helped fix my heart.”
Vanessa knelt.
“You had some very good doctors.”
“My mom says you helped too.”
The child wrapped both arms around Vanessa’s neck.
As Vanessa held her, she looked toward the place where Grant and Elise had stood.
The memory no longer felt like a wound.
It felt like a door.
Grant’s betrayal had forced Vanessa to see the corruption inside her marriage and foundation.
But what she did after seeing it had been her choice.
Her phone vibrated.
Evelyn had sent a photograph from the gala ballroom.
Workers were preparing for the foundation’s anniversary event.
The stage was ready.

Vanessa smiled.
