Chapter 12 - The Silver Suitcase Opens

Elise placed the case on a glass table beside the podium.

She entered a six-digit code.

The locks clicked.

Inside were the original Hawthorne Family Trust agreement, restricted donor letters and a red leather binder containing the proposed CardiaBridge transfer.

Grant lifted the binder.

“This authorization has been reviewed and signed.”

He held up the final page.

Vanessa’s name appeared above a notary seal.

Naomi leaned toward Evelyn.

“The notary died four months before that document was dated.”

Evelyn’s face hardened.

Grant invited Malcolm onto the stage.

Malcolm declared that the grants committee had conducted proper due diligence.

Elise displayed photographs of supposed overseas clinics.

The images looked convincing.

Mara Chen, the foundation’s technology consultant, sat in the control booth comparing them with a reverse-image database.

Every photograph had been stolen from legitimate charities.

Mara sent the results to Naomi’s tablet.

Still, Vanessa said nothing.

She needed Grant to explain where the money would go.

A donor called out, “Who controls CardiaBridge?”

Grant answered without hesitation.

“An independent international board.”

Elise smiled.

“Neither Grant nor I receives any financial benefit.”

Another lie.

Naomi already possessed the registration documents connecting CardiaBridge to Elise’s brother.

But then Grant said the sentence Vanessa had been waiting for.

“All transferred funds will be placed under a private investment structure managed by Reed Strategic Partners.”

Reed Strategic Partners belonged entirely to Grant.

He had just admitted, in front of donors and cameras, that foundation money would pass through his private company.

Evelyn stood.

“Mr. Reed, did the full board approve that arrangement?”

Malcolm answered for him.

“The grants committee had authority.”

“No,” Evelyn said. “It did not.”

Grant’s face tightened.

“This event is not the place for procedural arguments.”

Vanessa finally walked toward the stage.

“No,” she said. “It’s the place where you wanted everyone to believe your lie.”

Elise shut the suitcase.

Marcus raised one hand.

Security guards moved into position.

Grant gripped the podium.

“Vanessa, sit down.”

She stopped at the foot of the stage.

“You told me tomorrow night would make me feel special.”

Grant’s face lost color.

Behind him, the giant screen went black.

👉 Grant realized Vanessa had seen something before the gala—but he still had no idea how much evidence was about to appear behind him.
