Chapter 3 - The Records That Disappeared
Three weeks before the gala, Vanessa visited the foundation’s records room to review documents for the annual audit.
The archive manager looked uncomfortable when she requested the original endowment agreements.
“Mr. Reed already took them.”
“When?”
“Last Friday.”
Grant had told Vanessa he spent that Friday meeting hospital administrators in Raleigh.
She asked which documents he removed.
The list included the original Hawthorne Family Trust agreement, donor restriction letters and the foundation’s merger provisions.
Those records were kept inside the silver security case.
They were never supposed to leave the building without written approval from two board officers.
Vanessa had authorized nothing.
She confronted Grant that evening.
He barely looked away from his laptop.
“The auditors needed digital copies.”
“Then why remove the originals?”
“I was protecting them.”
“From what?”
Grant closed the computer.
“Vanessa, this is exactly what I’ve been talking about. You jump from concern to accusation without understanding the situation.”
She stared at him.
“I asked a reasonable question.”
“And I gave you an answer.”
“No, you changed the subject.”
His face hardened.
Then, almost instantly, his expression softened.
He crossed the kitchen and placed both hands on her shoulders.
“You’re exhausted,” he said gently. “Tomorrow’s gala is putting too much pressure on you.”
The gala was the foundation’s largest annual event. More than four hundred donors, hospital leaders and public officials were expected to attend.
Grant was delivering the keynote address.
He had refused to show Vanessa the complete speech.
“It’s a surprise,” he claimed.
Now he kissed her forehead.
“Tomorrow night, I’m going to honor everything you’ve built.”
Vanessa wanted to believe him.
But his hands felt like restraints.
Later, after Grant fell asleep, she checked the secure board portal.
Someone had uploaded a proposal for a closed meeting immediately after the gala.
The subject line contained only four words:
Emergency Leadership Transition Vote.
Vanessa’s name was not included among the meeting organizers.
Grant’s was.
