Chapter 14 - Let Him Explain the Trust
Vanessa opened the silver suitcase herself.
She removed the original Hawthorne Family Trust agreement.
Grant reached toward it.
Marcus blocked his hand.
Vanessa turned to the page Grant had used to support the transfer.
“You copied Section Nine,” she said. “The section allowing the foundation to form international partnerships.”
Grant regained some confidence.
“That authority is clear.”
“You left out the attached schedule.”
“There was no attached schedule.”
Vanessa looked at Naomi.
The attorney approached the stage carrying a sealed envelope.
“Caroline Hawthorne filed the schedule separately with the trust custodian,” Naomi said.
Grant’s expression changed.
When Caroline created the foundation, she feared future executives might turn suffering into a business opportunity.
She therefore divided the endowment.
The foundation could spend annual investment income.
But the original forty-eight-million-dollar principal remained inside the Hawthorne Family Charitable Trust.
Any merger, transfer or private management arrangement required the written approval of three people.
The board chair.
The independent trust custodian.
And Caroline’s direct descendant.
Vanessa.
Grant had forged Vanessa’s signature.
He had bribed Malcolm to imitate board approval.
But he had never contacted the independent custodian because he did not know one existed.
Naomi opened the sealed envelope.
Inside was the missing schedule and a letter from Caroline.
The room remained silent as Naomi read the key provision.
Any executive who attempted to transfer trust assets using fraud, coercion or concealed personal benefit would be permanently barred from managing Hawthorne funds.
The attempt would also trigger an immediate forensic audit of every transaction approved by that executive during the preceding five years.
Grant’s face went pale.
Vanessa looked at him.
“That is why I let you speak first.”
If the board stopped Grant before his presentation, he could claim the documents were unfinished drafts.
By publicly presenting them as authentic and personally beneficial, he activated the trust’s fraud protections.
Every transaction Grant had approved was now subject to independent investigation.
The doors remained closed.
Not to prevent guests from leaving.
To preserve every document, device and piece of foundation property in the room.
Grant looked toward the silver suitcase.
For the first time, Vanessa saw genuine fear in his eyes.
The forged transfer was not his only crime.
