Chapter 4 - The Speech He Refused to Share
The next morning, Vanessa asked Grant about the emergency vote.
He did not deny it.
Instead, he sighed as though she were embarrassing him.
“The board needs a succession plan.”
“I’m forty-one years old.”
“You’ve missed meetings.”
“Because you moved them.”
“You’ve become emotional with donors.”
“I cried with a mother whose son was awaiting surgery.”
Grant lowered his voice.
“That’s exactly what I mean.”
Vanessa felt the trap closing around her.
Compassion, once praised as the heart of the foundation, was now being used as evidence that she was unfit to lead it.
Grant opened a drawer and removed a prepared statement.
“I was going to discuss this after the gala.”
The statement announced that Vanessa was taking an indefinite leave due to emotional exhaustion.
Grant would become interim president.
Elise would assume control of strategic operations.
“I never agreed to this.”
“You don’t have to make the decision today.”
“My name is printed beneath it.”
“It’s only a draft.”
The signature looked almost perfect.
Almost.
Vanessa’s legal signature ended with a sharp upward stroke. The version on the statement curved downward.
Grant had practiced copying her name but had missed the final movement.
Vanessa placed the paper on the desk.
“Where did you get this?”
His jaw tightened.
“You’re imagining a conspiracy because you’re afraid of change.”
She walked away before he could see the fear on her face.
That afternoon, Vanessa called Naomi Cole.
Naomi had represented the foundation since its creation. She was direct, cautious and nearly impossible to intimidate.
Vanessa sent her a photograph of the forged statement.
Naomi studied it in silence.
“This alone won’t remove him,” she said. “He’ll call it an administrative draft.”
“What about the archive case?”
“If he removed restricted trust documents, we may have a breach of fiduciary duty. We need to know what he plans to do with them.”
Vanessa looked toward Grant’s closed office door.
“The gala speech.”
Naomi understood immediately.
Grant intended to use the public event to create momentum for whatever legal action came afterward.

“Do not warn him,” Naomi said. “A man who believes the room belongs to him will usually reveal more than a man who knows he is being watched.”
