Chapter 15 - The Children Who Never Received the Money
The forensic team began reviewing Grant’s transactions that same night.
Guests were allowed to leave after their contact information was recorded.
Grant, Elise and Malcolm remained with attorneys while investigators copied their devices and secured the silver suitcase.
By morning, Naomi had found the first missing million.
Grant had created inflated consulting contracts through companies connected to former college friends.
Money intended for rural screening clinics had been routed through those companies and returned to Reed Strategic Partners as “advisory fees.”
The pattern continued.
A mobile clinic program in eastern North Carolina had been delayed because Grant claimed donor funds arrived late.
They had not arrived late.
He had diverted them.
A pediatric hospital postponed purchasing specialized cardiac equipment after the foundation failed to release a promised grant.
Grant had blamed Vanessa’s “indecision.”
He had approved the grant himself, then moved the money into a temporary investment account under his control.
Vanessa read the reports in Caroline’s memorial office.
Every stolen dollar represented a patient forced to wait.
That betrayal hurt more than the affair.
Grant had not merely deceived his wife.
He had profited from frightened families who trusted the Hawthorne name.
Elise requested a private meeting with Naomi.
Grant had begun blaming her for CardiaBridge.
She offered passwords, emails and account records in exchange for consideration.
The evidence showed Elise had knowingly created false program reports and stolen photographs.
But she also revealed that Grant maintained a second encrypted ledger.
The ledger was stored on a small drive hidden inside the handle of the silver suitcase.
Marcus inspected it.
A concealed compartment opened beneath the grip.
Inside was a black hardware key.
Grant lunged toward the table.
Security restrained him.
Vanessa watched from across the room.
The man who once claimed he wanted to protect her mother’s work was now fighting to conceal the record of how he had exploited it.
Mara connected the hardware key to an isolated computer.
A password screen appeared.
Only one clue was displayed.
The day her heart stopped.
Vanessa’s breath caught.

Grant had used the date of Caroline’s death as the password to his stolen accounts.
👉 Grant’s cruel password opened a hidden ledger, but the name attached to the largest payment revealed that someone had helped him from inside Vanessa’s own home.
