Chapter 10 - The Woman They Did Not Introduce
The Hawthorne Grand Ballroom shimmered beneath crystal chandeliers.
Four hundred guests filled the room.
Hospital directors sat beside corporate sponsors. Former patients posed for photographs near a wall covered with portraits of children whose surgeries the foundation had funded.
Grant stood near the stage greeting donors.
Elise remained beside him in a silver gown.
The archive suitcase rested beneath their table.
Vanessa saw it immediately.
So did Marcus.
He touched his earpiece but did not move.
Not yet.
Grant’s smile disappeared when Vanessa entered wearing red.
He crossed the ballroom quickly.
“I gave you another dress.”
“I preferred this one.”
“You weren’t supposed to come through the main entrance.”
“I founded the event.”
His eyes narrowed.
Then photographers surrounded them.
Grant placed a hand at Vanessa’s waist and smiled for the cameras.
“You look beautiful,” he whispered through clenched teeth.
“Tomorrow night, I want you to feel special,” Vanessa whispered back.
His hand stiffened.
Before he could respond, the host called guests to their seats.
Vanessa discovered her place card had been moved from the center table to a small table near the rear exit.
A donor named Mrs. Porter looked horrified.
“Vanessa, there must be a mistake.”
Vanessa smiled.
“No mistake.”
She picked up the place card and walked toward the front.
Grant stepped into her path.
“Please don’t make a scene.”
“I haven’t said a word.”
“That’s what I’m asking you to continue doing.”
Vanessa passed him and sat beside Evelyn.
The lights dimmed.
The host welcomed the guests, praised Grant’s leadership and introduced Elise as “the visionary behind the foundation’s future.”
Vanessa’s name was not mentioned.
The room shifted uneasily.
Several longtime donors looked toward her.
She remained silent.
Then the host announced Grant as the evening’s keynote speaker.
Applause rose.
Grant walked toward the microphone.
Behind him, the giant screen displayed Caroline Hawthorne’s smiling face.
Vanessa’s fingernails pressed into her palm.
Grant had placed his betrayal beneath her mother’s image.
Evelyn leaned closer.
“Say the word and I’ll stop him.”
Vanessa watched Grant open his speech.
May you like
“Let him speak first.”
👉 Grant believed Vanessa’s silence meant defeat, so he began the speech that would personally connect him to every forged document in the silver suitcase.
