Chapter 17 - The Husband Who Wanted Half
Grant filed for divorce before criminal charges were finalized.
His attorneys demanded half of Vanessa’s personal assets and compensation for the “marital value” he had supposedly added to the foundation.
He argued that he had helped build the Hawthorne brand.
He claimed the gala had publicly damaged his reputation and future earning ability.
Naomi read the filing without changing expression.
“He is asking you to pay him for exposing his fraud.”
Vanessa almost laughed.
Grant’s strategy depended on separating his criminal conduct from the marriage.
But the postnuptial agreement contained one section Rachel had not altered.
A spouse who intentionally stole from a charitable trust controlled by the other spouse forfeited all claims to trust-related growth and foundation-linked property.
Grant’s own hidden ledger proved intentional theft.
The airport photograph proved his relationship with Elise existed while he used marital resources to fund her travel and home.
His claim collapsed.
The court granted Vanessa exclusive use of the house and froze Grant’s remaining assets for restitution.
During mediation, Grant asked to speak to Vanessa privately.
She refused.
He sent a handwritten letter instead.
He wrote that he had loved her once.
He blamed ambition, pressure and feeling invisible beside the Hawthorne name.
He asked Vanessa not to let one mistake erase twelve years.
Vanessa returned the letter with a single sentence written across the envelope.

The divorce was finalized six months after the gala.
Grant lost his executive credentials, professional licenses and every claim to the foundation.
He later pleaded guilty to conspiracy, wire fraud, charitable asset theft and document forgery.
Elise pleaded guilty to fraud and falsifying nonprofit records.
Malcolm and Rachel also accepted prison sentences.
Restitution orders recovered most of the stolen funds.
Public opinion changed quickly.
For months, Grant had described Vanessa as emotional, absent and incapable.
Now hospital leaders, donors and former patients publicly defended her.
The board voted unanimously to reaffirm her as foundation president.
But Vanessa did not feel victorious when the room applauded.
She felt tired.
