Chapter 6 - GUSTAVO’S FIRST QUESTION
Mariana waited two weeks before telling her father everything.
Gustavo listened without interrupting.
He sat in the warm kitchen of the home where Mariana grew up, writing dates in a black notebook.
When she finished, he asked only one question.
“Did Michael ever have authority to promise our money?”
“No.”
“Did you ever sign a guarantee for Arden Legacy Partners?”
“No.”
“Then why do three investors believe you did?”
Mariana looked up.
“Three?”
Gustavo turned his laptop toward her.
His compliance officer had received verification requests from wealthy clients who believed Reyes Family Holdings backed Michael’s fund.
Attached to one request was a guarantee letter.
Mariana’s digital signature appeared at the bottom.

“He didn’t legally transfer them,” Gustavo said. “But he used them to establish credibility.”
“How many investors?”
“We don’t know yet.”
Mariana looked toward the notebook.
“What do we do?”
“Document everything.”
“I should confront him.”
“No.”
“He forged my signature.”
“And if he knows we discovered it, records may disappear.”
Gustavo had spent thirty years surviving contracts with men who smiled while hiding knives inside paragraphs.
His anger rarely became loud.
It became organized.
He instructed the family office to preserve every card charge, email, recorded call, and club invoice.
He hired forensic counsel.
He told Mariana to stop discussing finances with Michael outside writing.
Most importantly, he asked her not to shut down the accounts yet.
“Why?”
“We need to see where the money is moving.”
For three weeks, Gustavo’s team tracked the charges.
