Chapter 1 - THE MEN AT HER DOOR

Michael Arden slammed his palm against the doorframe.
“Unlock the cards, Mariana.”
Mariana stood inside the white marble entrance of the house they had once shared.
She wore a white silk robe. Her eyes were red from the divorce hearing that had ended only forty-eight hours earlier.
But her hands were steady.
Outside, Michael wore the navy suit she had bought for his fortieth birthday. His mother, Celeste, stood beside him in white tweed, pearls, and the black Chanel bag she had charged to Mariana’s account six months earlier.
Two nervous men waited behind them.
Mariana recognized one from the exclusive Sapphire Room.
The other had attended Michael’s so-called investment dinners.
Celeste lifted her handbag and pointed it toward Mariana.
“You humiliated my son.”
Mariana glanced at her phone.
DECLINED CARD — SAPPHIRE ROOM
DECLINED BACKUP CARD
OUTSTANDING INVOICE: $186,400
“You’re not authorized anymore,” she said.
Michael placed one shoe across the threshold.
“This isn’t a game. Restore the accounts.”
Mariana did not move.
The red light on the doorbell camera blinked beside his shoulder.
Michael had not noticed it.
Celeste leaned closer.
“You think a divorce lets you destroy the life he built?”
Mariana almost laughed.
Michael’s watch, his car, his club membership, his mother’s jewelry, and the penthouse suite he used for investor parties had all been paid through credit lines tied to Mariana’s family office.
He had built very little.
He had simply learned to pose beside things she funded.
Michael pushed against the door.
Mariana touched her screen and sent the live footage to her father.
Across town, Gustavo Reyes watched Michael force his foot across the threshold.
On the kitchen table before him were months of Sapphire Room bills, photographs of altered signatures, and a notebook documenting every threat since Mariana filed for divorce.
Gustavo set down his coffee.
“Document everything,” he said.
Mariana’s phone displayed another alert.
LEGAL NOTICE DELIVERED TO MICHAEL ARDEN.
Michael’s own phone began ringing.
The Sapphire Room.
Then his attorney.
Then the bank.
His expression changed.
Celeste finally saw the camera light.
Mariana looked at both of them.
“Dad already saw it.”
One of the men behind Michael stepped away.
The other said quietly, “Michael, you told us she agreed to cover tonight.”
Mariana’s eyes narrowed.
“Cover what?”
Michael turned toward the men.
“Don’t answer her.”
But the Sapphire Room representative already had.
“The private settlement room,” he said. “And the investors waiting inside it.”
Mariana realized Michael had not come only because his cards were declined.
May you like
He had come because a much larger payment had failed.
👉 Michael demanded access to Mariana’s cards, but the unpaid Sapphire Room invoice was connected to a deal he had never disclosed during the divorce.
