Chapter 16 - THE WOMAN WHO FINALLY SPOKE IN COURT
Celeste’s trial lasted five weeks.
She entered each morning in conservative suits and pearls.
Her attorneys presented her as a devoted mother who handled financial details Michael was too busy to understand.
They claimed Mariana knew her accounts supported the family lifestyle.
They called the criminal investigation a wealthy family’s attempt to punish outsiders.
Then Mariana took the stand.
Celeste watched her with the same expression she once used at holiday dinners.
The expression said:
You will not embarrass this family.
The prosecutor asked Mariana who owned the credit lines.
“My separate trust.”
“Did you authorize Celeste to use them after the divorce?”
“No.”
“Did you guarantee Arden Legacy Partners?”
“No.”
“Did you sign the hidden trust pledge?”
“No.”
“Why did you remain silent when Michael publicly claimed your family supported his success?”
Mariana looked toward the jury.
“Because I believed protecting my husband’s confidence protected our marriage.”
“Did your silence give him permission to forge your signature?”
“No.”
Celeste’s attorney approached.
“You benefited from Michael’s public success, correct?”
“I benefited from believing my marriage was real.”
“You attended luxury events.”
“Yes.”
“You lived in an expensive home.”
“A home purchased by my trust before the marriage.”
“You allowed your husband to use family cards for years.”
“As an authorized user.”
“So you approved the lifestyle.”
“I approved use within limits. I did not approve fraud.”
The attorney displayed photographs of Mariana and Michael smiling at the Sapphire Room.
“You looked happy.”
“I was.”
“Then later you shut down every account after he divorced you.”
“The decree ended authorization.”
“Because you were angry.”
“I was devastated.”
The courtroom became quiet.
Mariana continued.
“But devastation did not transfer ownership of my accounts to my ex-husband.”
The prosecutor later played the doorbell footage.
Michael demanded she unlock the cards.
Celeste accused her of humiliation.
Mariana remained inside her home.
She did not scream.
She did not threaten them.
She simply refused access.
Then the jury heard Celeste’s recorded words:
Mariana will pay before letting him go to prison.
The defense collapsed.
Michael testified next.
He admitted Celeste designed much of the fraud.
He also admitted following the plan because it allowed him to look richer and more powerful than he was.
When asked why he expected Mariana to reopen the cards, he answered:
“Because she had always protected me from public consequences.”
