Chapter 5 - THE WOMAN WHO WANTED HER SON’S DIVORCE
Celeste never wanted Michael to leave Mariana’s money.
She only wanted him to leave Mariana.
For years, she encouraged him to treat the marriage like a business structure.
“You don’t need her approval,” Celeste would say. “You only need access.”
Michael laughed the first time Mariana overheard it.
“Mom is joking.”
Celeste was not.
She resented every boundary Mariana set.
When Mariana refused to pay for a third vacation property, Celeste accused her of financial control.
When Mariana asked for receipts from the household account, Celeste said rich families did not count every dollar.
When Mariana objected to Michael using Gustavo’s aircraft for personal clients, Celeste called her selfish.
The more Michael depended on Mariana’s family, the more Celeste insisted Mariana contributed nothing emotionally.
“She’s cold,” Celeste told him.
“She questions everything.”
“She makes you ask permission like a child.”
Michael began returning home later.
He moved business dinners to the Sapphire Room.
He kept his phone face down.
Mariana suspected an affair.
She hired no private investigator.
She found no lipstick or hotel receipt.
What she discovered was worse.
Michael had created a financial life in which she was both invisible and essential.
During a marriage-counseling session, he finally said he wanted a divorce.
“I don’t feel respected.”
Mariana stared at him.
“You present my father’s assets as your own.”
“This is what I mean.”
“You asked why I don’t respect you.”
The counselor tried to slow them down.
Michael continued.
“You use money to keep me beneath your family.”
“I have never stopped you from earning your own.”
“You know I need the cards for business.”
“Then they aren’t personal cards.”
“They support the image clients expect.”
“An image you cannot afford.”
Michael stood and walked out.
Celeste called Mariana that evening.
“My son is finally choosing dignity.”
“Then he can fund it himself.”
“You won’t cut him off.”
“Why not?”
“Because you still love him.”
Mariana did.
That was the most painful part.
She still woke when his side of the bed was empty.
She still remembered the young man who promised he would never become entitled.
She still hoped the divorce filing was a threat designed to frighten her into surrendering control.
Then Mariana received the preliminary settlement proposal.
Michael demanded permanent access to two Reyes credit lines as part of “marital lifestyle maintenance.”
Celeste demanded continuation of her personal cards because Mariana had “customarily supported the extended family.”
Mariana read the proposal in silence.
Her grief changed.
It was no longer grief for the marriage.
