Chapter 11 - THE MOTHER WHO BUILT HER SON’S TRAP
Celeste demanded to meet Michael in jail consultation after both were temporarily detained for questioning.
Their attorneys advised separate defenses.
Celeste refused.
“My son and I have nothing to hide.”
Investigators allowed the meeting and recorded it under a court order.
Celeste believed the room was private.
Michael entered angry and frightened.
“You told me Bellhaven paid investor expenses.”
“It did.”
“You bought the townhouse.”
“I hosted people there.”
“You transferred nine hundred thousand dollars after I filed for divorce.”
Celeste leaned closer.
“We needed protection.”
“For who?”
“Our family.”
“Which family? You moved the money into an account only you control.”
Celeste’s face hardened.
“Do not speak to me like Mariana.”
Michael stared at her.
For the first time, he saw what Mariana had seen for years.
His mother treated every question as betrayal.
Celeste reminded him of everything she sacrificed.
The schools.
The clothes.
The introductions.
The years she spent making him believe he deserved rooms he could not yet afford.
“You wanted to be important,” she said. “I made people see you that way.”
“With Mariana’s money.”
“With resources she never appreciated.”
“She trusted me.”
“And you needed that trust. Don’t become sentimental now.”
Michael lowered his head.
“Did you plan to leave?”
“I planned for every outcome.”
“You were going to let investors blame me.”
“You signed the documents.”
“You told me they were safe.”
Celeste smiled without warmth.
“You never read anything.”
The sentence shattered the last illusion between them.
Celeste had not merely enabled Michael.
She had studied his arrogance and used it.
She knew he signed what flattered him.
She knew he concealed what embarrassed him.
She knew he would defend her because admitting the truth meant admitting Mariana had been right.
Michael asked one final question.
“Did you ever believe the fund would work?”
Celeste leaned back.
“I believed Mariana would pay before letting you go to prison.”
The recording ended.
Prosecutors played it for Mariana and Gustavo.
Mariana felt no satisfaction.
Michael had betrayed her willingly.
Celeste’s manipulation did not erase his choices.
But the recording revealed the central calculation behind everything.
They had never believed Arden Legacy was secure.
They believed Mariana’s love would absorb the loss.
Gustavo closed the file.
“They didn’t think you were weak because you cried.”
Mariana looked at him.
“They thought loving them made me financially responsible for every harm they caused.”
Her father nodded.
Michael’s attorney requested a private meeting.
Michael was ready to cooperate against Celeste.
His condition was that Mariana temporarily restore one account so he could pay legal fees.
Mariana’s answer was immediate.
