Chapter 18 - THE HOUSE AFTER THE SHOUTING STOPPED
The white house felt enormous after the trial.
For years, it had been filled with Michael’s clients, Celeste’s demands, and staff hired to maintain a life Mariana never truly chose.
Mariana dismissed no one abruptly.
She helped each employee find another position or offered continued work under new terms.
Then she changed the house.
Michael’s office became a library.
The formal dining room became a financial-education classroom.
The locked wine room became secure document storage.
She removed the oversized portrait of herself and Michael from the entrance.
For several weeks, the wall remained empty.
Mariana did not rush to replace the past.

Not because Michael shouted.
Because Mariana remained inside, preserved evidence, and did not let the confrontation become physical.
One officer described it as a model response.
Mariana rejected the idea that she had been fearless.

Her knees shook beneath the silk robe.
