Chapter 10 - THE EMPLOYEE WHO SOLD THE FAMILY NAME

The woman was Lucia Moreno, a junior relationship manager at Reyes Family Holdings.

She had access to investor directories, trust schedules, and internal meeting dates.

Lucia disappeared the morning after Michael’s confrontation.

Her work laptop had been wiped.

Gustavo refused to assume she acted alone.

His cybersecurity team recovered deleted messages between Lucia and Celeste.

Celeste promised introductions, commissions, and a senior position once Michael’s fund grew.

In return, Lucia provided names of wealthy clients who already trusted Gustavo.

Michael approached them at the Sapphire Room.

He never directly claimed Gustavo approved the fund.

He allowed Celeste to make that claim.

Then he displayed forged documents carrying Mariana’s signature.

Lucia’s messages contained one troubling sentence.

MARIANA’S SEPARATE TRUST IS THE REAL PRIZE.

Mariana read it twice.

“What does that mean?”

Gustavo opened the original trust documents created by Mariana’s late mother.

The trust contained substantial assets Mariana would fully control at forty.

Her fortieth birthday was six months away.

Until then, Gustavo remained co-trustee.

Michael could not legally access the assets.

But Lucia had found a draft spousal-consent form in an archived estate file.

Someone used it to create a new document.

The forged version claimed Mariana pledged part of the trust as security for Arden Legacy Partners.

If the fund failed, investors could attempt to claim against her inheritance.

“It wouldn’t survive a proper legal challenge,” Gustavo said.

“But it could freeze the trust for years.”

Mariana understood.

Michael did not need to own her inheritance.

He needed investors to believe it stood behind him.

And if the fraud collapsed, he planned to bury Mariana inside litigation while moving whatever cash remained.

Lucia was arrested two days later at a bus terminal.

She agreed to cooperate.

She admitted giving Celeste the trust draft.

“Did Michael know it was forged?” investigators asked.

Lucia looked down.

“He knew Mariana hadn’t signed it.”

“Then why use it?”

“He said she would never testify against him.”

Mariana felt the words like another slap.

Michael had not only counted on her money.

He had counted on her remaining emotionally loyal after he destroyed the marriage.

Lucia also revealed that Celeste controlled a hidden company called Bellhaven Consulting.

Arden Legacy paid Bellhaven nearly three million dollars.

The money purchased Celeste’s townhouse, jewelry, and luxury travel.

Michael knew about some payments.

He believed they were reimbursements for investor recruitment.

But one transfer occurred after the divorce was filed.

It was for $900,000.
