Chapter 13 - THE DIVORCE WAS NEVER AN ESCAPE
The Sapphire Room employee was named Eric Hale.
He managed private-event technology and copied the recording after hearing Celeste discuss forged documents.
Eric had been afraid to report it.
Michael’s public interviews convinced him the lies would continue unless someone challenged them.
The recording began six months before the divorce filing.
Michael sounded exhausted.
“Mariana is asking questions about the settlement accounts.”
Celeste replied, “Then stop giving her reasons to ask.”
“She wants independent audits.”
“She wants control.”
“She is co-trustee.”
“Until forty.”
Michael became quiet.
Celeste continued.
“File for divorce before her birthday. She’ll be devastated. She’ll negotiate emotionally.”
“What do we gain?”
“Distance. She becomes the angry ex-wife instead of the trust chair investigating her husband.”
“And the guarantee?”
“She won’t expose it. That would hurt her father’s name.”
Michael asked, “What if she cuts off the cards?”
Celeste laughed.
“She has never denied you anything that could embarrass you publicly.”
The recording ended.
Mariana sat motionless.
The divorce had not begun because Michael wanted emotional freedom.
Celeste had turned it into a strategy.
Michael may have wanted to leave the marriage.
But he also believed ending it would make Mariana easier to manipulate.
He expected her to spend months begging him to return.
During that time, the fund would continue using her accounts.
By the time she gained full control of her trust, investor claims would already surround it.
Gustavo looked at Mariana.
“You don’t have to listen to the rest.”
“Yes, I do.”
The next audio segment captured Michael expressing doubt.
“She’ll be destroyed.”
Celeste answered:
“She’ll recover. Women like Mariana always do. The money keeps them safe.”
Michael said nothing for a long time.
Then:
“Prepare the filing.”
That silence was his decision.
He had known the divorce would wound her.
He used the wound as part of the plan.
When prosecutors confronted him with the recording, Michael stopped blaming Celeste for everything.
He admitted using the forged guarantee.
He admitted hiding Orion-style settlement payments through the Sapphire Room.
He admitted continuing to spend after the divorce because he believed Mariana would eventually reopen the cards.
“What changed at the door?” the prosecutor asked.
Michael looked down.
“She didn’t look broken.”
No.
Mariana had been broken.
