The hidden account contained $2.7 million.
It had been opened two years earlier using copies of Mariana’s passport and trust documents.
The signature was forged.
Statements were delivered electronically to an email address that differed from Mariana’s by one letter.
The money came from Arden Legacy investors.
Then it moved into Bellhaven Consulting.
Celeste’s defense argued the account proved Mariana knew about the fund.
Michael initially claimed he had never seen it.
Investigators recovered a voice message.
Celeste told him:
“If anything happens, the money points to Mariana. Her father will settle before the government asks questions.”
Michael replied:
“Don’t use her name again.”
Celeste said:
“It’s already done.”
The message helped Michael’s defense slightly.
It also proved he knew Celeste had forged Mariana’s identity and did not report it.
Mariana’s attorney worried the account could confuse jurors.

On the date the account opened, Mariana had been in Bogotá caring for her dying grandmother.
Her passport showed she was outside the United States.
Security footage showed Celeste entering the bank with Lucia.
A bank employee remembered Celeste claiming Mariana was ill and had authorized her mother-in-law to complete the paperwork.
The employee had skipped required identity verification because Celeste appeared wealthy and confident.
That assumption became another lesson in the case.
People had repeatedly believed Celeste because she looked like someone entitled to authority.
They dismissed Mariana because she remained quiet.
At a pretrial hearing, prosecutors displayed the doorbell footage beside the bank video.
In both recordings, Celeste carried the same black Chanel bag.
At the bank, it held forged documents.
At Mariana’s door, she used it to point and demand access.
The image became symbolic.
Celeste had worn stolen luxury while insisting Mariana owed her more.
The judge allowed the account evidence to remain in the case but formally identified Mariana as an identity-theft victim.
Her name was cleared before trial.
Michael’s attorney offered a plea agreement.
He would testify fully against Celeste and surrender every remaining asset.
In return, prosecutors would recommend a reduced sentence.
Michael accepted.
Celeste refused.
“My son is weak,” she told her attorney. “He always lets women control him.”
Even after losing everything, she could not accept responsibility.
