Chapter 6 - THE RECORDING HE MISSED

The phone screen was broken, but the recording had uploaded automatically.
Elena listened to it alone in her apartment after Alejandro left.
His voice was unmistakable.
“If the wedding or merger fails, your father loses everything.”
She replayed the sentence until her hands stopped shaking.
Then she copied the file to three encrypted locations.
Elena wanted to call Don Roberto immediately.
She drove halfway to his house before turning around.
Her father had undergone heart surgery the previous year. His doctors had warned him to avoid severe stress. More importantly, Alejandro’s documents suggested that someone inside Marquez Holdings had helped Varela acquire the loans.
Elena did not know whom she could trust.
So she pretended.
She apologized to Alejandro for accusing his family.
She told him the wedding planning had overwhelmed her.
He accepted the apology as though granting mercy.
The next morning, he replaced her phone and asked for the passcode “in case of emergencies.”
Elena gave him one.
It opened a carefully prepared version of her life.
The real evidence remained on a second device hidden behind a loose panel in her dressing room.
She began documenting everything.
Photographs of bruises.
Screenshots of threats.
Copies of financial records.
Dates, times, witnesses, and medical visits.
She also started meeting secretly with Claire Bennett, an attorney who had represented Elena’s late mother’s trust.
Claire listened without interrupting.
When Elena finished, she said, “You are not responsible for saving your father by marrying a man who hurts you.”
“He controls the debt.”
“Then we prove how he obtained it.”
Claire brought in a forensic accountant.
Together they traced Varela’s shell companies through multiple states. The pattern suggested fraud, bribery, and illegal use of confidential Marquez information.
But suspicion was not enough.
They needed the insider.
They also needed proof that Victoria knew about Alejandro’s violence and used it to force Elena’s cooperation.
Claire advised Elena to leave the relationship and seek immediate protection.
Elena almost agreed.
Then Alejandro sent her a photograph of Don Roberto leaving his cardiologist’s office.
Under it was one sentence.
A frightened old man can’t survive losing his life’s work.
Elena stared at the message.
Alejandro was no longer merely threatening a company.
May you like
He was telling her that her father was being watched.
👉 To protect Don Roberto without alerting Alejandro, Elena would have to convince the Varelas that their frightened bride was finally ready to surrender.
